Have you ever walked into a room and been drawn to the beautiful woodwork? Whether it's the moldings around the windows or the built-in shelving, there's something about carpentry pieces that can make a space feel warm and inviting.

Millwork and casework are two forms of carpentry that are often confused. Though both can add beauty and value to any home, there are some critical differences between them. If you're curious about which one suits your home, read on to find out the distinction between these types of woodwork.

As its name implies, millwork refers to precisely-made custom woodwork crafted in a mill. Typical examples include armoires, embellishments, moldings, and trim pieces. Since this type of carpentry is based on client specifications, it usually has a unique look, shape, and dimension.

On the other hand, casework alludes to factory-made, standardized wood cases or boxes. This form of woodwork includes bookcases, built-in cabinets, cupboards, and different types of cabinetry. Depending on the specifications, the components can either be partially prefabricated and assembled later on-site or completely preconstructed using standard measurements.

Millwork has limited production because its designs are typically unique. By contrast, casework is usually mass-produced.

Since millwork is typically customized, this woodwork is often more expensive. Labor cost is also huge since carpentry professionals usually install millwork pieces on-site. But the craftsmanship you get is always worth the hefty price tag. On the other hand, mass-produced casework pieces are more budget-friendly.

           Fit

Millwork pieces are fabricated to be one with the space where you intend to install them, so they fit perfectly in that specific area. An excellent example is a bookcase under the stairs. However, the downside of these bespoke items is that moving them to a different place may be difficult.

Casework typically includes free-standing cabinets, shelves, and other storage structures. These pieces may not always fit seamlessly into your space, but placing them anywhere is easier.

           Usage

Millwork carpentry products are generally used in kitchens, cupboards, and pantries where cabinets and shelves are integrated into the architectural structure. On the contrary, movable furniture, like chests and dressers, is best utilized in living rooms and bedrooms. So, homeowners typically prefer casework for these areas.

How To Install Door Knobs

This blog is a helpful guide on how to install door knobs correctly. Contact us today at Day's Door Company for high-quality doors in Sioux City, Iowa!

Installing a brand-new door knob or replacing an old one is a simple task that anyone can do if they have a bit of time. Follow these steps to place your new door knob into your door like a pro:

            1. Remove the Old Door Knob

This step is vital if you’re replacing an old door knob. Otherwise, you may skip this procedure.

Detach the screws that hold the knob in place. Then, remove the interior and exterior knobs. Afterward, you may begin taking off the latch by unscrewing the top and bottom and screws on it. Finally, pull out the latch.

            2. Install a New Latch Plate

For this step, you must ensure that your new latch plate fits your door mortise—the hole where the latch is inserted. The shape of your door mortise determines whether you need a round or rectangular latch plate. If your latch plate doesn't suit your mortise, purchase a new one that will match this hole. Then, fasten this plate to the latch.

            3. Insert the Latch Into the Door’s Edge

Slide the latch through the door hole. Ensure the latch's beveled side faces the door frame. Doing this will prevent any difficulties in closing your door.

            4. Secure the Latch Into the Door

Most latches have two screws to secure them to the door. Fasten the latch onto the door using the necessary screws.

            5. Slide the Door Knob’s First Half Into the Latch

One part of the door knob has a protruding square steel peg. This part is the lock or exterior side. Insert this first with the peg placed in the latch. Putting this component on the right side of the door is also crucial. The door's lock section should be outside your house or room, not inside.

            6. Place the Second Half of the Door Knob

Put the door knob's other part, ensuring that its screw holes are aligned with the first half. Then, with one hand on each door side, push the two halves of the door knob together. If either side gets stuck, they're not perfectly aligned. When this happens, take the knobs out and re-attach them, ensuring they’re correctly oriented.

            7. Screw Both Ends of the Door Knob

Secure both sides of the door knob with the needed screws. Most door knobs are attached to the door using two screws on the top and bottom.

            8. Test the Door Knob

To ensure the door knob isn’t loose, turn it several times. If it is wobbly, tighten the screws or use wood putty to secure them into the holes. You can also open and close the door several times to check if the latch slides smoothly into the door frame.

Residential Garage Doors Ideas To Elevate Your Curb Appeal

Here are some residential garage doors design ideas to upgrade your home’s look. Call Day’s Door Company for great-looking garage doors in Sioux City, IA.

Getting creative with your garage door is a great way to revamp your property's look. This enormous door takes up a considerable chunk of your home's exterior, so it can vastly impact your curb appeal. Here are a few design ideas for residential garage doors:

           1. Liven Up Your Garage Door With Colors

Changing your garage door's color is one of the easiest things you can do to revamp the look of this large entry point. You don't have to replace your garage door; all it needs is new paint.

You can be creative when it comes to color. If your home’s exterior only has neutral palettes, you can paint your garage door with bold hues like fire engine red or bright blue to make your curb look livelier. If you're aiming for a warmer feel for your property, why not try a faux wood finish?

           2. Accessorize Your Garage Door

Adding simple decorative hardware to your garage door can make your home look more polished and quaint. These hardware pieces include hinges, ring pulls, and handles.

A canopy or pergola is also a perfect decor for your garage door. It can accentuate this enormous door and add architectural dimension to your home.

           3. Add Flair Using Windows

There's no denying that placing windows on your garage door can make it more attractive. Aside from brightening up your interiors, windows can add elegance to your home's facade. If privacy is an issue, you can opt for frosted or mirror glass. Besides being functional, these types of windows are gorgeous to look at.

           4. Create Drama Using Lights

As an entry point to your home, it is essential to place lights near your garage door. But besides adding security to your house, lighting can bring character to your property. Light can create patterns and nuances on your wall. On top of that, it can draw attention to certain aspects of the environment.

You can decorate your garage door with wall lamps or floodlights. It would be best to choose fixtures that go well with the theme of your house. By placing ornamental lights around your garage door, your home can look breathtaking from day to night.

           5. Match the Garage Door to the Front Door

If you want your home to look more coordinated, mirroring your garage door design to your front door is a great idea. You can match paint colors, window and panel patterns, frame design, light fixtures, and decorative hardware. With a cohesive facade, your house will appear picture-perfect.

Your garage door is one of the first things people see when they pull up to your home. It only makes sense that this door goes well with the rest of your house.

Remodeling your home is a fantastic way to add value to your property and make it more comfortable and stylish. Windows and doors are great places to start when you want to transform your space. These two can vastly impact your property's visual appeal and comfort level. Here are a few ideas to revamp your home by modifying the windows, doors, and more:

           1. Create Scenic Views With Floor-to-Ceiling Windows

If your space looks dreary, adding windows can brighten it up. You can take things up a notch by installing floor-to-ceiling windows. These large windows let in an incredible amount of natural light and provide stunning views of the outdoors. Adding these windows to your home will make it look more beautiful, open, and spacious.

            2. Shift to Energy-Efficient Windows

A popular home remodeling trend is replacing old windows with energy-efficient ones. Doing this can help reduce energy bills and make your home more comfortable during extreme heat and cold.

Among the most energy-efficient window options available today are argon-filled double-pane windows. They come in various styles, so you can find ones that match your desired theme.

           3. Bring In the Light With Transoms and Sidelights

Another way to add more light and sophistication to your space is by adding transoms and sidelights. These two are pieces of glass placed around doors and windows, with transoms set on the top and sidelights on the sides. You can arrange these glass sections in many ways. Feel free to get creative in achieving your desired look.

           4. Spice Up Your Interior Doors

Homeowners typically stick to the basic types when it comes to interior doors. But you can use these entry points to add flair to any room. Take advantage of the many interior door designs available today and easily upgrade the look of your space.

           5. Add Windows in Your Kitchen

Kitchens are typically the heart of most homes. You and your family probably spend a lot of time in it. Aside from making your kitchen brighter, windows can make this stuffy area airier. You can also enjoy lovelier views while cooking if you have more windows.

           6. Install a Window Seat

Popular in traditional homes, window seats are making a comeback for excellent reasons. They offer a cozy nook for you to enjoy a book, your tablet, or laptop while being close to nature. This sitting area is also a classy option to add storage to your space. You can tuck away some of your items underneath these quaint seats.

Using broken garage doors can be dangerous. Garage doors with defective springs or sensors may accidentally fall on passersby. And doors that won’t securely close provide robbers easy access to your home or building.

           Proper Maintenance of Garage Doors

Regular maintenance prolongs the lifespan of your garage door and ensures that it operates safely and reliably. In addition, warranties of garage doors and openers require you to keep them well-maintained. Professional maintenance services typically include garage door and opener inspections, hardware tightening, track cleaning, and lubrication of rollers, springs, and pulleys.

How often should you schedule a maintenance call? It depends on how heavily used your door is.

Generally, garage doors should be inspected and maintained every 3,000 cycles. A cycle refers to a complete open and close movement of your door. You may find the number of cycles your garage door has gone through on your door opener. Some openers may even provide alerts for preventive maintenance. You may request your garage door service provider to set these alerts for you.

Smart Security and Safety Tips for Commercial Garage Doors

Follow these smart tricks to protect your commercial garage doors from intruders. For durable garage doors in Sioux City, Iowa, contact Days Door Company.

Crimes may happen anytime. As a business owner, preventing them from occurring inside your premises can help protect your assets, keep your employees safe, and avoid disruptions in your operations. One way to do this is by securing all entry points to your establishment.

An entrance that should be prioritized in your security plan is your garage door. This large passage allows access not only for people but also for vehicles. To help with your peace of mind, you may follow these tips to increase the security of your garage door:

            Install Surveillance Cameras Near Them

Place security cameras near your garage doors, so you can monitor who enters and goes near them. Choose weather-proof surveillance cameras with high-res night vision. These days, you can even find models with AI-powered face detection, plate number recognition, and suspicious activity monitoring. These cameras can send off fairly accurate alarms for unusual activities.

            Monitor Activity With Smart Sensors

Smart sensors send out alarms if any unauthorized person forces entry to your garage doors. Today, some sensors can even send notifications on your phone if someone is trying to yank your door open.

            Expose Intruders With Motion-Detection Lights

Aside from helping you save on energy costs, motion floodlights also aid in increasing the security of your premises. With a sudden burst of light, they can scare off intruders hiding in the dark from breaking into your garage door.

Limit Access With Commercial Door Openers

Garage doors with commercial openers allow entry only to persons and vehicles with registered devices. Choose models that already employ rolling code technology to ensure that your door openers cannot be easily hacked. Also, make sure to retrieve access devices from separated employees and business partners that no longer need to enter your premises.

Keep Your Garage Doors and Openers in Top Condition

Commercial garage doors and their openers are usually he

Doors with gaps and dents pose not only security risks but also safety hazards. The same is true for malfunctioning openers. So, have these immediately repaired once defects have been detected. (Pro Tip: Upgrade to a wind load garage door if your facility is located in an area with strong winds).

Ensure That They Are Locked Before Everyone Leaves

Using traditional locks such as padlocks and deadbolts is a proven way to increase the security of your garage doors. You should have someone assigned to lock them after operating hours.
